2006.01.20: Eastglen High School Grease Musical Poster Remake

Shoot commissioned by Linette, Eastglen Composite High School drama teacher and Rapid Fire Theatre improvisor.

A possible candidate for the poster.

Linette had to supervise a social studies final exam. The actual shot took no more than ten minutes and we all got a little bored . . . so we kept shooting.

This shot gives you an idea of how the scene was lit. Foreground was popped with a Plume Wafer 140 soft box with thin baffle and a Lighttools 50degree soft egg crate driven by a Balcar Iris 3200W/s head on a Balcar AQ Pack battery-powered flash generator. Ian set a few sets of gels to add colour and texture to the backdrop. A single spotlight from above hotspotted the car. Yup, that's a barbell weight at the end of the boom . . . it does the trick.

All photos shot with the Nikon D2X. First two photos shot with the 70-200/2.8 VR. Third shot made with the 17-55/2.8. All hand held. Flash motion freezing for the first two, all continuous light for the last shot. Ian, grade 10 student and�our stage lighting technician�is sitting in the car behind "Sandy" and "Danny" in the third shot.

Hmm, terrifying shooting conditions. It seems to me your elaborate setup did the trick. I don't like the background though.

I wasn't terribly pleased with the background either. Shutter speed was about 1/20s just to get enough ambient light going at ISO 100 because the stage lighting was pretty dim even at maximum brightness. Shooting at about 150mm hand held at 1/20s would have been impossible, even with VR, without the studio strobe. Plus the strobe made my skintones ambient light independent.

tough conditions indeed! the background - a live location would have been nice! like a street or something... still, you got some good poses there.

I don't want to sound like I'm defending my work but the car was available on stage here and scheduling didn't allow for a whole lot of flexibility in locations. It was more like "here's the stage, lights and the two leads and a car, make it work" kind of thing. As most should know, I love location shooting and I love available light (assisted with some off-camera controlled light, of course) and ideally, that's what we would have done. But we didn't have ideal conditions available.

yeah, you did make the best of a limited location... besides, that crummy brown winter we have doesn't make for good "on location" shots this time of year, anyways...

You'd be surprised . . . I have enough location lighting to do a lot of stuff with that car at night even with our really gross weather.
