Sunday, August 21. 20052005.06.22 - Tara Lynn, Campus Eye Center window adMy friend and father of a former business partner commissioned me to shoot an eye catching scene for a 3.5 x 10' window sign for his store, Campus Eye Center. The store is on street level on the main floor of the Campus Suite Hotel which is located just across the street from the Telus Professional Development Centre on the University of Alberta Campus. This store's window is prime advertising space and it was a good idea to get a sign up in it as there is a lot of pedestrian traffic. The sign is taking a lot longer than usual since optical stores feel it appropriate to consult with the optical sanctioning body to approve verbage for their signs. This sign is going ahead after not having received a response about the verbage for about two months.  This photo was selected for use in the window ad. The grass and sky will have to be grown and stretched to accomodate the odd aspect ratio of the window ad. I haven't built the ad yet but we may have to compromise on its size. Hopefully not, though. Model is Tara Lynn. Makeup by Maurice. Shot in the same field I shot Leanna in but this was before any grains started showing up.  Just wanted to experiment with some fabrics. Maurice helped with the fabrics to get them to drape better and something really weird happened. According to Maurice, Tara dug her nails into the back of his head and he reacted by pushing her forward, thus creating this image. Comments

I pass that place every so often (Campus Eye Center). Now I can marvel at your fantastic work. Yay!
Side note: My (un)expert opinion is that the "flyaway-hair-in-face" look (#2) takes away from the fabulous photos you take. However, that doesn't stop me from loving the picture.
One more thing... I love both the picture of Leanna on her own in the grain field, as well as the two of you in front of the Leg.

Thanks for stopping by . . . I guess I can't make up any excuses for a delayed reply since my brother already told you that I've seen your comment. =P
I'm working on the Campus Eye Center ad tonight but it's tough; the window is 107" wide and about 100" tall with a 4" split down the middle of the window that equally divides the window space into two. My printer is 44" wide but the material I need to print on for this window is only 42" wide. The photo I want to use would look really odd if I try to stretch the grass and sky out on the left almost triple its current width. The other option is to split the photo and run two 42" pieces down each half of the window giving a 42 + 4 + 42" x 60" tall or so and drap from the top or middle. What do you think? =) Each window is going to have 8" on each side which won't have any coverage and half of the height of the window won't be covered. All because the photo is shot landscape. =P
Re: the second photo with the purple-y fabric . . . the shot could have been worse but I guess it could have been a lot better. I agree . . . see at least the model's lips and, even better, an eye would have improved the impact of the shot. However, the wind was out of my control as was this fleeting moment so I just took what I could. =) My biggest peeve is still the little ball of facial tissue in her right hand. No one else seems to notice, though. One of my friends told me that this is his favourite photo that he's ever seen of mine even though you don't like it (paraphrased from what he said, referring to you.
 )
Yeah, I like the grain field photo, too . . . I gave Leanna a print on canvas for her home and I made another identical print for the studio. Thanks. =)

So cool, I saw this ad (I pass that building every day on my way home from the U). I actually remember stopping and thinking about what it looked like and being impressed by it. Now I was searching for a good photo store to buy an umbrella from and ran across your site by chance - pretty small world eh? Anyway, great work here, I'll be stopping by more often to look at/learn from your lighting setups.
p.s. any tips on a good place in Edmonton to buy real lighting gear (umbrella, clamps for, lighting stand)?

Kris, thanks for leaving a comment. I'm pleased that you like the photo. The printing for the sign was done in house here, too.
 Technicare/Carousel Photo Imaging is probably the best place in town for that sort of thing. http://carouselphoto.com/ They are on Jasper Ave. between 105 and 106 St. I actually have a couple umbrellas for sale that I'm selling for cheap. Wow . . . this file was processed when my eye for colour wasn't that great . . . the photo is actually much, the skintones are much less natural here than they are in its current state.
